About
Dorothy draws inspiration from her childhood spent throughout the United States and Japan. She grew up in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Michigan, Indiana, Shizuoka (Japan) and California. This multi-cultural upbringing taught her to be adaptable and to find stillness amidst a changing world. The awareness her raw, bold style evokes reflects this inner peace.
Before pursuing her career in art, Dorothy practiced criminal and corporate law and did pro bono work. Dorothy helped defend the homeless at the Los Angeles Public Defender’s Office and fought for the disabled and mentally ill in Indiana. She also clerked for Indiana Attorney General’s Office and for Los Angeles Appellate Division Judge Fumiko Wasserman. Before that, Dorothy helped teach students in an underperforming high school and helped students with down-syndrome get over their fear of water.
She holds a B.A. in Political Science from UCLA and a J.D. from Indiana University Bloomington Maurer School of Law and was a Visiting Scholar at the UCLA School of Law. The discipline of law showed her the limits of structure that she challenges in her art.
Dorothy grew up playing competitive tennis and piano. She lives in New York City with her husband, two sons and part-time East Coaster dog.
